This 2-day introductory course covers the downstream operations in a biopharmaceutical production process used in the development of recombinant protein for human therapeutic use. This course includes both hands-on practical and lecture components covering topics such as ultrafiltration/diafiltration, viral clearance and chromatography.
During this course trainees will be introduced to the basics of UF/DF and chromatography using lab scale equipment to ensure understanding of the process. Trainees will then build on this knowledge and perform these operations on pilot and production scale equipment.

  • Fundamentals of downstream processing for product recovery
  • Introduction to  chromatography &  column packing
  • Introduction to  ultrafiltration/diafiltration
  • Introduction to  viral clearance technologies

This course is designed for those that are new to downstream processing including operators, technical staff, engineers and managers who need to increase their basic knowledge of actual operations in a modern downstream processing biopharma plant.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the theory and practice of chromatography
  • Perform protein separation using a variety of chromatography columns (pilot and lab scale)
  • Pack pilot and production scale chromatography columns
  • Understand the theory and practice of ultrafiltration/diafiltration
  • Perform protein concentration and buffer exchange using pilot and lab scale UF/DF systems.

A competency based assessment will be undertaken at the end of the course. This will certify proficiency in the theory and practical skills.
